Memo on Howell & Custis Traffic Issues Posted on Oct 27th, 2012
The memo provides daily traffic counts for the 200 block of East Custis and on East Howell in 2006 before the construction of the new Route 1 bridge at East Monroe Avenue; during bridge construction, in 2007; and after the bridge opening in 2010. Daily traffic on Custis increased from 612 vehicles to 1,774, before declining to 1,265. Traffic on Howell increased from 120 to 731 vehicles. Traffic reached 2,610 vehicles per day after the new bridge opened.
The memo points out that local streets that have traffic signals and are connected to major roads routinely convey about 3,000 vehicles per day. The memo says that new traffic counts would take place this month with the results ready for the November community meeting. The memo further states that police will be devoting two to four hours per week toward enforcing no-through-truck, stop sign, and speed limit regulations on East Howell and East Custis. These results will also be shared with the community at the November meeting tentatively set for Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center.
The meeting is designed to provide residents with information about actions Alexandria has taken or could take to deal with increasing traffic, especially from new development at Potomac Yard
